Where You'll Visit
- Cinque Terre
Today’s Traveling Women’s “Rome and Tuscany Discovery” escorted vacation treats guests to the best of Italy’s largest city, Rome, with its inimitable architecture and history, and Florence, a walkable art and culture center with spectacular wineries in romantic Tuscany. While in Italy, there will be ample time to smell, taste, experience, revel, cook—and shop—with new friends.
A guided tour of the Vatican Museums reveals art masterpieces collected and commissioned by the popes over the centuries—ranging from the world-famous Sistine Chapel to the Borgia Apartment (now used for exhibiting part of the Collection of Modern Religious Art). An unforgettable visit to iconic St. Peter’s Basilica will be followed by a stop at Piazza Venezia, the central square where four major roads meet and the gateway to nearby important nearby sites such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
Montepulciano, Pienza, and Figline Valdarno
En route to Florence, a wine tasting at a Tuscan cellar in the hilltop town of Montepulciano and a nibble of famed pecorino cheese in Pienza are perfect introductions to the region. A five-night stay in the charming village of Figline Valdarno, located at the foot of Mount Chianti, is launched with a Tuscan feast featuring traditional dining (fettunta, anyone?) and local wines.
A guided walking tour along Florence’s cobblestone lanes and across its ancient bridges, or pontes, acquaints visitors with the Palazzo Vecchio, the city’s most important government building, flanked by the scenic Piazza della Signoria, and Giotto’s Campanile, or bell tower, of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The original Michelangelo’s David is found in the Accademia Gallery, which is packed with world-class art.
In the center of this flawlessly preserved medieval town is Il Campo, known for the famous Palio run, a horse race around the piazza twice each summer.
The five fishing villages of Cinque Terre, dangling between land and sea, set atop cliffs and surrounded by vineyards, are quintessential highlights of the Italian Riviera. As you travel through the hamlets by train and boat, take in the natural beauty of these less-accessible and picturesque villages.
