Country Roads of Scandinavia

Never mind the rumored temperatures, Scandinavia is a hot destination right now. Once the land of Vikings, the gorgeous fjords and bustling cities combine for an escape that is intellectually and aesthetically appealing. Begin in cosmopolitan Oslo, where a local expert guides you along the ramparts of medieval Akershus Castle and to the Viking Ship Museum. Your afternoon is free to visit the most modern ski jump in the world or City Hall, site of the Nobel Peace Prize Award Ceremony. The city presents an interesting contrast to what follows—Hardanger Plateau, an undeveloped mountain plateau that has been designated a national park. Purple wildflowers share space with the occasional waterfall and, if you’re lucky, a herd of wild reindeer.

After crossing the flat plain, you end up in Bergen for dinner at Zupperia Matbørsen, where the menu reflects traditional Norwegian fare with an Asian twist. A guided tour of the city reveals a picturesque port still largely reliant on the sea and a coastline that no camera seems to capture accurately. Sail through the narrow fjords to Stavanger, founded almost 900 years ago. You leave Norway behind as you sail to Denmark, pausing to spend time in Aarhus, Odense and, eventually, Copenhagen. Hans Christian Andersen’s presence is heavy here, as is a love of Danish royalty. Your local expert takes you inside Copenhagen Cathedral, where the Crown Prince of Denmark married Princess Mary in a real-life fairy tale.

I love to suggest Italy and Spain because of the culture and the flair of the people–their fashions, language and way of life. They take time to enjoy life's pleasures. When you're there, you feel it, too.
