From the flamboyant nightlife of Rio de Janeiro to the mysterious depths of the Amazon rainforest, Brazil has it all. Whether you’re into river explorations, natural wonders or cultural festivities, South America’s largest country will exceed your expectations.

Sights to See in Brazil

AAA Member Jacqueline Hall and her friend Helen Wick, retired schoolteachers who vacation together, were pleasantly surprised by just how luxurious a destination known for excitement and adventure could be on their Amazon vacation. They fell in love with Brazil while taking in amazing views of Iguassu Falls, which they could also see from their hotel room, and getting pampered aboard a luxury Amazon River cruise.

Intrigued yet? Here are three ways you can fall in love with Brazil, too.

Explore the Amazon

If you’ve ever dreamed of venturing up the Amazon like a true explorer, you might enjoy a multiday cruise along the world’s second-longest river. You’ll be stunned by the exceptional service; some sailings have a 1-to-1 passenger-to-staff ratio. And you’ll explore the rainforest and scout for native flora and fauna with a trained naturalist. Catch a glimpse of a caiman gliding below the surface by night, or spot a pod of pink river dolphins leaping above the waves at dawn. You can also arrange to visit villages inhabited by Amazon natives.

The Amazon Ecopark Jungle Lodge is the perfect place to experience even more of the rainforest. There, you can sleep in vine-draped bungalows and enjoy natural bathing pools, a private beach, and access to the Monkey Forest, where wild animals come and go as the seasons unfold.

Culture and Carnival

The famous Christ the Redeemer statue towers over the colorful Carnival festival, which enlivens Rio de Janeiro’s streets during its five-day celebration. Cities throughout Brazil take part in the saturnalia, but none on quite so grand a scale as Rio. Celebratory sounds fill the air as hundreds of bands parade through the city, serenading the partygoers who flock to Rio’s streets and pack the half-mile runway of the Sambódromo.

Be sure to catch the Samba Parade, widely considered the highlight of Carnival. Costumed dancers from the country’s top samba schools perform in the streets for grandstands full of onlookers. Such a spectacle promises a new level of cultural immersion for travelers interested in experiencing the authentic Brazil.

Iguassu Falls

Wonders of Brazil

Not only is Brazil home to one of the world’s most colorful cultures, it offers some of nature’s grandest spectacles as well. Iguassu Falls’ 275 separate cascades throw up a curtain of mist visible from miles away. Cross walkways suspended over thundering falls to viewing platforms that bring you amazingly close to the 297-foot wall of water known as Devil’s Throat.

But Iguassu Falls isn’t the only wonder that should be on your radar. Circle hundreds of palm-fringed tropical isles aboard a luxurious saverio, a type of schooner, in Sepetiba Bay. If you’re lucky, turtles and stingrays might join you in the shallows off the shore of a secluded beach.
