Where in the world is it?
This South American wonder is on the border between Brazil and Argentina.

When should I visit?
You’ll find the most temperate weather and smallest crowds in September and October.

How close can I get?
Three ring-shaped balconies at the water’s edge give the best views of the popular Devil’s Throat section.

Keep your eyes peeled:
Groups of vencejos—local swifts—build their nests behind the falls and can often be seen swooping through the skies.

Claim to fame:
In the 2008 film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the titular archaeologist goes over the falls.

Niagara Falls

Where in the world is it?
On the border of Ontario and New York; the Canadian side offers a view of Horseshoe Falls.

When should I visit?
Summer is best temperature-wise, but the crowds tend to be bigger, so plan to arrive early in the day.

How close can I get?
The Whirlpool Aero Car, an antique cable car in operation since 1916, takes you on a ride above the Niagara Whirlpool rapids. (It’s only open April through November.)

Keep your eyes peeled:
Niagara Falls is considered the honeymoon capital of North America, so you may see more than a few lovebirds.

Claim to fame:
Jim and Pam were married on The Maid of the Mist, a popular tour boat, during the sixth season of The Office.

Victoria Falls

Where in the world is it?
One of the largest waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls lies on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia.

When should I visit?
July to September is the best time; the waterfall puts on quite a show, but the water volume isn’t so high that you get soaked.

How close can I get?
You can feel the spray on your cheeks on a sunset cruise aboard the African Queen.

Keep your eyes peeled:
You’re likely to see bungee-jumpers, skydivers and all manner of adrenaline junkies.

Claim to fame:
Victoria Falls was the first site visited during the first season of The Amazing Race in 2001.

Wailua Falls

Where in the world is it?
Hawaii’s twin Wailua Falls are on the east side of Kauai and deliver twice the pleasure.

When should I visit?
Avoid the dry season (April to October), when the water levels tend to be low.

How close can I get?
The falls are easily accessible from the road. The observation point next to the falls is perfect for taking photos.

Keep your eyes peeled:
When the sun is at just the right angle in the early morning, a rainbow is often visible along the base of the falls.

Claim to fame:
The distinctive double-barrelled falls are recognizable in the opening credits of the TV series Fantasy Island.

Where in the world is it?
The falls are part of the Golden Circle in southwest Iceland.

When should I visit?
Iceland is warmest from May to September, but the falls are especially gorgeous in winter months.

How close can I get?
Get close enough to get wet by taking the narrow path that provides close-up views of the massive, two-tiered waterfall.

Keep your eyes peeled:
When the weather is clear, turn your back to the falls to catch a glimpse of the spectacular Langjökull glacier.

Claim to fame:
Gullfoss featured in the music video for alternative rock band Live’s 2004 single “Heaven.”
